This Physician Couple Left New York for International Locums. Here’s why they’re thriving

Thank you to Locumstory and Global Medical Staffing for sponsoring this chat. is an educational, online resource about all things locum tenens. Their website has tons of information about the ins and outs of locum tenens and first-hand perspectives from actual locums physicians to help you determine if locum tenens is right for you.

Global Medical Staffing is a locum tenens agency with a worldwide reach that places US doctors in New Zealand, Australia, Guam, Saipan, the Caribbean, Canada, and of course, the United States. Historically, GMS has also placed doctors in Singapore and the United Arab Emirates — and regularly expands into new countries. This worldwide reach means that GMS is probably there if a location is placeable.

I recently sat down with Drs. Holly and Paul Llobet, a physician couple that left their practices in New York to travel around the world and do International Locums

Dr. Holly Llobet is a Critical Care & Palliative Medicine doctor, and Dr. Paul Llobet is an Internal Medicine physician currently working as a Hospitalist.

They had practiced for 20+ years in New York, their son had already graduated college, and they were in a state of transition.

The hospital system where they worked had recently been taken over by a large organization – changing the culture.

They were young, active, and wanted to try something different – preferably by the beach⛱️!

Watch the video below to see what they did next!

You’ll learn:

  • Why, after 20 years of practice in New York, they left
  • The locale that helped them segway to living outside the US
  • How they coped with the limited clinical resources (like using a ventilator from the Vietnam War)
  • Why Holly no longer wants to go back to her job in New York
  • How they worked with Global Medical Staffing to find an“outside the box” adventure
  • How they rediscovered why they went into medicine in the first place
  • The cultural challenges they faced around a dying patients
  • Their advice for a physician on the fence about trying out an experience abroad

Now I’d love to hear from you! What would you hope to get out of an international locums gig? Let me know in the comments below!
