We are currently recruiting Consultant Gastroenterologists to work across acute public hospitals and hospital groups throughout Ireland, offering excellent career stability, modern facilities, and a strong work–life balance.

Overview of Gastroenterology Services in Ireland

Gastroenterology departments in Ireland are well-established and continue to expand in response to increasing demand. Services are delivered across Model 3 and Model 4 hospitals, including regional and tertiary referral centres, many of which are university-affiliated.

Typical departmental structures include:

  • Dedicated endoscopy units (diagnostic and therapeutic)
    Inpatient gastroenterology wards and consultation services
  • Outpatient clinics (general GI, hepatology, IBD, functional GI, etc.)
  • Close collaboration with General Surgery, Oncology, Radiology, Pathology, and Emergency Medicine
  • Participation in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings
  • Opportunities for subspecialty interest development depending on hospital needs (e.g. IBD, Hepatology, Advanced Endoscopy)

As a Consultant Gastroenterologist, you will:

  • Deliver high-quality inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology care
  • Perform and report diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures
  • Contribute to on-call rotas (varies by hospital)
  • Participate in MDT meetings, audit, and clinical governance
  • Supervise and support NCHDs and junior medical staff
  • Engage in service development, teaching, and quality improvement initiativesRequirements
  • Eligibility to register with the Irish Medical Council under the Specialist Division for Gastroenterology
  • Minimum 5+ years’ experience at Consultant level (or equivalent)
  • Strong background in hospital-based gastroenterology services
  • Proven experience in endoscopy (level dependent on post)
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and teamwork skills
  • Commitment to high standards of patient care and clinical governanceWhat’s on Offer:
  • Salary: €233,527 – €280,513 per year (depending on experience and contract type)
    Additional earnings:
  • Extra hours and on-call commitments are paid separately and can add €40,000+ per year, depending on the hospital
  • Working hours: 37 hours per week (public consultant contract)
  • Annual leave: 30 days
  • Public holidays: 10 days
