An American Doctor in Ireland

“You and your patient, in the hospital or in private practice, you decide your care of plan. Insurance companies are not part of that…the management plan I want for my patient is what I can get for my patient based on logistics and availability. No one is going to tell me I can’t have it from an insurance or payment point of view, ” Dr. Kathleen McCann, a neurosurgeon, emphasizes a key difference between the Irish and American Healthcare systems.

Dr. Kathleen McCann trained as a neurosurgeon, completed her post-doctoral fellowship in molecular biology, and is now a COVID clinical researcher in Ireland. She shares her experience within the Irish Medical System including the process of medical registration, key differences in Healthcare culture, and the challenges American doctors may face in transitioning from the US to Ireland. She strongly advises those interested to first consider a locums position to gain experience within the the Irish Medical System, and ensure that they are making a decision that is right for them.
